Strecker
Memorial Laboratory
Roosevelt Island, New York
Exterior
Restoration Page Ayres Cowley Architects, LLC designed
the restoration of the exterior of the Strecker Memorial Laboratory
on Roosevelt Island. The building, built in 1892 and designed by Frederick
Clark Withers, served as a laboratory and autopsy facility for the
former City (Charities) Hospital. This local and national landmark
had been gutted by fire and was adapted for re-use as an electrical
substation for the Metropolitan Transit Authority. This project received
a Lucy G. Moses Preservation Award from the Landmarks Conservancy for
its “miraculous preservation effort,” and a 2003 Award
for Excellence from the Preservation League of New York State.
